AU Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf Arrives in Mogadishu for High-Level Talks

Mogadishu, March 23, 2025 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has arrived in Mogadishu today, leading a high-level delegation from the African Union (AU). This visit marks his first official trip since assuming office in early February 2025.
Security Measures and Reception
The Somali government has taken stringent security measures across the capital, with additional forces deployed in key locations, especially around Aden Adde International Airport and major government buildings. Upon arrival, Youssouf and his delegation were warmly received by senior Somali government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Prime Minister.
Agenda of the Visit
Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with:
- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
- Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre
- Other senior government officials
The discussions will focus on:
✅ Somalia’s security situation – particularly the role of AUSSOM (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia) in the ongoing counterterrorism efforts against Al-Shabaab.
✅ Strengthening AU-Somalia relations – exploring ways the AU can further support Somalia’s political stability and development.
✅ Regional cooperation – discussing broader Horn of Africa issues, including Djibouti-Somalia bilateral relations and regional security dynamics.
Somalia’s Support for Youssouf’s Leadership
Somalia was among the strongest supporters of Mahmoud Ali Youssouf during the AU leadership race. On February 15, 2025, Youssouf secured a two-thirds majority vote to become the Chairperson of the AU Commission, defeating Kenyan politician Raila Odinga.
Youssouf, a seasoned diplomat with over 20 years of experience, has served as Djibouti’s Foreign Minister since 2005. Fluent in Somali, Arabic, English, and French, he is known for his close ties with Djiboutian President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh and his pragmatic approach to diplomacy.
Strategic Importance of the Visit
Djibouti and Somalia share historical, cultural, and political ties, and this visit reaffirms AU’s commitment to Somalia’s security and development. It also highlights the growing role of smaller nations like Djibouti in leading African diplomatic efforts.
Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf is expected to outline his vision for the AU’s role in peacebuilding, economic integration, and governance reforms across the continent during his tenure.
His visit to Mogadishu is a significant step in reinforcing Somalia-AU cooperation, particularly at a time when Somalia is making progress in stabilizing the country and rebuilding its institutions.
